Ravindra Jadeja has overtaken R Ashwin at the top of the ICC Test rankings for bowlers, after taking nine wickets against Australia in the third test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Jadeja and Ashwin had begun the Test joint-first at 892 rating points. Ashwin’s return of two wickets saw him slip to second place with 862 points.
The left-arm spinner’s performance earned him seven points and put him on 899, one shy of becoming the third Indian to achieve 900 points – Ashwin, who touched 904 recently, and Bishan Singh Bedi are the other two.
Jadeja’s Saurashtra team-mate, Cheteshwar Pujara has climbed up to a career-best second place in the ICC Test rankings for batsmen. Pujara’s double-century in the third Test propelled him to 861 rating points, enough to displace Kane Williamson who has slipped to fifth place. Pujara’s knock also pushed him above Joe Root and Virat Kohli, who occupy third and fourth place respectively.
He is only behind Steven Smith, who consolidated his place at the top of the rankings with scores of 178* and 21 in the third Test. Smith is 80 points ahead of Pujara, with 941, and is now joint-fifth highest ever with Peter May. Only Don Bradman (961), Len Hutton (945), Jack Hobbs and Ricky Ponting (942) have achieved higher rating points.
