Call it a victory for the people: The NHL will release the list of protected and available players during the June expansion draft.

There was a public outcry earlier this month when word surfaced during the GMs meeting that the NHL intended to keep those lists private. In reversing course, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly tells Sportsnet that the outlook changed after “further consideration of views and feedback we received on the subject. Not from the clubs, but from media and public.”

What it means is the 72-hour window between when teams file their protected lists and the Vegas Golden Knights finalize their roster decisions will be full of speculation.

The list of players available is due to be released to the public simultaneous with when it is circulated to the other 30 clubs, likely on June 18, according to the NHL.

Each of the 30 teams must submit its list of protected players by 5 p.m. ET on June 17.

The Golden Knights have until 5 p.m. ET on June 20 to make their selections, with those choices revealed June 21 in a show at T-Mobile Arena.
