The Vancouver Whitecaps announced on Thursday that they acquired central midfielder Tony Tchani in trade with the Columbus Crew in exchange for winger/forward Kekuta Manneh.
The Whitecaps also receive $225,000 in Targeted Allocation Money, and $75,000 in General Allocation Money as part of the deal.
Manneh is in the final year of his current contract, and if he re-signs with the Crew, the Whitecaps will get Columbus’ natural first-round pick in the MLS SuperDraft. Also, the Whitecaps will receive additional General Allocation Money if Manneh is traded by Columbus prior to Dec. 31, 2018, and they will retain a percentage of any future transfer fee if Manneh is sold to a club outside of MLS.
Tchani, 27, is a veteran of several MLS seasons, having spent time with Columbus, the New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC.
Manneh, 22, joined Vancouver as the fourth overall pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. The native of Gambia made 101 MLS regular season appearances with the Whitecaps, scoring 22 goals and adding 12 assists.
Considering Manneh’s contract situation and the recent emergence of teenager Alphonso Davies, it hardly came as a surprise that the Whitecaps pulled off a trade deal.
