According to the team management, Shane Watson was the ‘ideal choice’ to lead the team in the absence of Virat Kohli © BCCI
Royal Challegers Bangalore had to dig deep into their contingency plans ahead of IPL 2017. When it was learnt that the shoulder injury that Virat Kohli sustained would rule him out of the initial stages of the tournament, coach Daniel Vettori had said AB de Villiers would captain the team. Now, it appears de Villiers’ availability for the opening game of the season on April 5 is in doubt, which has led the franchise to name the Australian allrounder Shane Watson as the interim captain.
“Shane has been one of the top performers and a great mentor for the team, making him an ideal choice to lead the team this season till Virat is back on field,” Royal Challengers chairman Amrit Mathur said.
